his brothers get the shoes they want, but the shoes he wants are sold out.his brothers push him around but he gets in trouble.His bad mood – as the world frustrates him at every turn – is not only palpable but completely (I think) justified. Who hasn’t had a Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day?Īlexander, the youngest of three boys, is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. This book has got to be one of the funniest and most sympathetic kids’ books that I know – an opinion that is renewed each time that I read it. Then, I sat down, re-read it, and got up feeling better because hey, at least my day isn’t terrible, horrible, no good, and very bad: I had the luck to find it at a garage sale (coloured on in orange crayon, which only increases its value) some years ago, then forgot that I had it, then found it the other day when a three-year-old was over and I was pulling out things for her to look at (we have an extremely kid-unfriendly place, except for the books. Now…I get to review one of my favourite picture books.

But fear not! I have a plan! …and it involves blogging more often. I’ve been going bonkers at work and have been very VERY bad about posting to this blog. Facial expressions and body language are right on target. Her black-and-white drawings comically capture real events as well as those that occur only in Alexander's animated imagination. Glasser admirably fulfills her stated mission to illustrate this tale 'in the style of' Ray Cruz, the artist for the previous Alexander books. Because next time his family relocates, 'I'm not-DO YOU HEAR ME? I MEAN IT!-going to move.' Alexander's voice belongs at once to him alone and to every child. N.O.' Roaming the neighborhood, he takes a look at his 'special places' and bids good-bye to all his 'special people,' announcing that 'I'm saying good-bye-but it won't be my last.' By story's end-after he lets some reassuring promises from his parents sink in-Alexander softens his tone, conceding that he, too, is packing up his things, but for the final time. His family is moving 1000 miles away and he does not want to go: 'Never. Twenty-three years after Alexander's first appearance, in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, the hapless character makes a gratifying return.
